Wave Hill House was built in 1843 by William Lewis Morris. Famous residents include Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain and Arturo Toscanini. The estate was deeded to the City of New York in 1960 and Wave Hill, Inc., was formed in 1965 as a non-profit corporation. Wave Hill House is on the National Register of Historic Places. Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx overlooking the Hudson River and The Palisades. Its mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscapes, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts. Dattner Architects was retained by Wave Hill to update their Master Plan and to design renovations to the House, funded through the NYC Department of Design and Construction. Designs were approved by the New York City Landmark Commission. The project provides much needed structural repairs and reconfigures spaces, stairs, and inserts an elevator to make them publicly accessible and to improve the flow of visitors through the building. Additional work includes upgrading the lighting and finishes in the historical Armor Hall and the children's programs spaces at the Kerlin Learning Center, as well as new cafe servery and new public restrooms. The project includes exterior restorations, slate roof replacement and restoration work on all windows and lintels.
