The first native-born mayor of New York City was Stephanus Van Cortlandt, who served from 1677 to 1678 and again from 1686 to 1688. He was the patroon of Van Cortlandt Manor and a member of the governor's executive council from 1691 to 1700. Van Cortlandt was also the first resident of Sagtikos Manor, built around 1697. His descendants became influential through marriages with English military leaders and Loyalists during the American Revolution, with some becoming prominent in English society.
