Johann Maelzel’s Automaton, "The Turk," debuted in New York, captivating audiences with its apparent ability to play chess. A concealed operator controlled its moves while Maelzel managed the performance. As the machine gained fame, New York’s top chess player, "Greco," challenged it. Maelzel delayed until his skilled operator, Schlumberger, arrived. The Turk then dominated opponents in Boston and returned to New York, defeating Greco’s challengers. Facing high stakes, Greco withdrew, admitting The Turk’s superiority without playing.
