This painting depicts the D. E. Crumley Grocery, with its Conoco gas station and collection of colorful junk decorations. It was an Austin landmark from the mid-1960s, when it opened on the newly built IH-35, until 1994, when its owner, D. E. Crumley, retired. The artist painted what he called "its colorful essence" and hoped to capture the many symbolic references that "epitomize the Texas experience." This painting was originally purchased for the City Municipal Building.
