The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts blends a museum with a world class collection of 19th & 20th century American paintings, sculptures and works on paper with a school of fine arts. The artist most closely identified with the Academy is Thomas Eakins who directed the School in the 1880's completely revamping the traditional arts education; much of his work is contained in the collection. The original Furness Building is considered one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic Architecture. The Landmark Building was an automobile showroom and storage facility for the Gomery-Schwartz Motor Company and then the Hudson Motor Car Company; it was rechristened the Samuel MV Hamilton Building when it was added to the complex.
