On November 25, 1783, during Evacuation Day celebrations at Fraunces Tavern, a series of symbolic toasts were made to honor the departure of British troops from New York City and the victory of the American Revolution. These "Thirteen Toasts," hosted by Governor George Clinton in honor of General George Washington, celebrated the United States, its allies, the American Army, fallen heroes, and the ideals of liberty and justice.
