Marvel was commissioned by the MTA to design a modular grate system for five miles of streets in three flood-prone areas of Queens that would simultaneously protect the subway from flash flooding, enhance the streetscape and be easy to relocate and assemble as needed.
Marvel was commissioned by the MTA to design a modular grate system for five miles of streets in three flood-prone areas of Queens that would simultaneously protect the subway from flash flooding, enhance the streetscape and be easy to relocate and assemble as needed.
The project takes advantage of its highly visible location as part of the streetscape to accomplish its functional goal while raising public awareness of the flooding problem.
Nearly 800 modules have been installed in the first phase of construction with additional locations now under study throughout the city.
A wave pattern adds visual interest to the urban landscape and marks the minute topographical distinctions that shape varied depths of expected flooding.
