Mary Miss's project for the 14th St. subway station engages directly with notions of public space, awareness, and what it means to be a work of art. Miss took the opportunity presented by a recent restoration of the Union Sq subway station to install red frames around structurally, architecturally, historically, and aesthetically significant elements of the station. The frames simultaneously encourage viewers to notice often-overlooked visual elements of the station and to realize that they're noticing--that is, to consider how aware (or unaware) we usually are of the space we move through.
