After Giuseppe Morello's 1909 counterfeiting conviction, his brothers moved to Italian Harlem, opening the way for Salvatore "Toto" D'Aquila to take control in Downtown Little Italy. D'Aquila became New York's mafia boss of bosses, amassing wealth during Prohibition despite living humbly at 91 Elizabeth Street. His efforts to dominate liquor markets led to a violent conflict with Giuseppe "Joe" Masseria by 1920, as both sought control over lucrative territories on Kenmare, Broome, and Grand Streets.
